AMHERST, MA (April 11, 2026) – The Tufts University baseball team took two heartbreaking losses in a doubleheader matchup on the road against Amherst College this afternoon in an outer-division NESCAC conference clash.
The Jumbos (17-7, 3-3 NESCAC), began game one with
Emmet Christian for his sixth start of the spring. The sophomore did not register a decision, but finished with four strikeouts and one earned run on seven hits in five full innings of dealing. Christian started off his outing with three strikeouts in two shutout innings before allowing his only run in the third.
Tufts reached the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning to take a one run lead.
James Henshon doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Jack Kamin collected his 19th RBI of the season with a single through the left side of the infield to bring Henshon home.
The Mammoths knotted the game up back at one with a tally in the bottom of the same frame. Jackson Boyer led off with a double down the left field line and reached home plate from third on an RBI single from Tyler McCord.
In the top of the sixth inning the Jumbos scored the go-ahead run to put Amherst on their heels in the seven inning game.
AJ Lysko opened with a single up the middle and advanced to third after
Max Pavlik singled through the right side of the infield.
Jesse McCullough gave Tufts another one run advantage with an RBI single to bring home Lysko from third.
Mitchell Hwang took over for Christian in the bottom of the sixth and held the Mammoths scoreless in the inning, while allowing a single.
McCord walked off game one for Amherst with a double to right center field to score Leo Foust and Boyer and capture the hard fought 3-2 victory.
In game two,
Michael O'Brien took the hill as the starting pitcher and picked up right where he left off from his strong performance against Colby last weekend. The junior opened with six shutout innings with a strikeout and five hits allowed before the Mammoths reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Jumbos struck first in game two for third consecutive contest this week with two runs in the top of the third. McCullough reached first on a single to right field and scored on a double to right center field from Kamin for his second RBI of the day.
Tom Pender continued his strong weekend with an RBI single to right field to bring Kamin to the plate.
A six run barrage in the top of the seventh inning put the Jumbos ahead by eight. Henshon (1), Kamin (2), Pender (1), and Lysko (1) each picked up at least one RBI in the frame.
Amherst clawed their way all the way back with an eight-run bottom of the seventh to tie the game at eight all.
The Mammoths stunned the Jumbos with yet another walk-off victory after facing an eight run deficit in the second game of the afternoon. Foust led off the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on a single into center field from McCord. Charlie LaFreniere was the hero in game two as he drove home Foust from second with an RBI single to nab the victory.
Henshon extended his hit streak to six games with his four hits today, while Bannish improved his streak to a career-high nine.
Tufts' busy weekend continues tomorrow at home against No. 22 Endicott College at 1 PM.
