MEDFORD, MA (April 12, 2026) – The Tufts University women's sailing team finished a best-ever third out of 10 teams at the New England Team Race Championship hosted by the Jumbos at Upper Mystic Lake. The action concluded on Sunday.
The day started with the completion of a Top 8 round that had begun on Saturday. Tufts won three out of its four Top 8 races on Sunday to finish the round with a 5-2 record. Today they defeated Dartmouth, Bowdoin and Roger Williams, while losing only to Harvard.
Tufts' 5-2 record in the Top 8 round, combined with their 6-3 mark from the opening round robin, gave the Jumbos an 11-5 total mark that placed them among the top four out of the 10 teams. That put them into a Top 4 final round on Sunday along with Yale, Brown and Harvard. The Jumbos defeated Harvard, but lost to Yale and Brown. Their 1-2 mark in the Top 4 races gave Tufts a 12-7 record overall for the weekend.
The Jumbos' 12-7 overall mark was tied with Brown, who won a tie-breaker against the Jumbos (number of races won when tied teams met) to earn second place. Yale, whom Tufts had defeated in the Top 8 round on Saturday, won the Legler Trophy as New England Team Race champions. The hardware is named after the legendary former Tufts coach.
Yale receives an automatic berth into the Intercollegiate Sailing Association National Team Race Championship coming up April 26-27 in New Orleans. Tufts, second-place Brown and fourth-place Harvard are in good positions to potentially earn at-large berths to the national championship. The full field will be announced on Tuesday evening.
This was the fifth New England Women's Team Race Championship (2022-26), and Tufts had its best finish by far. The previous Jumbo best was last year's sixth.
