Baseball Posts Nine Runs in First Inning to Capture 14-1 Win Over Mitchell in Game One of NCAA Regional

MEDFORD, MA (May 15, 2026) – The Tufts University baseball team scored nine runs in the opening frame to set up a 14-1 victory over Mitchell College in Game One of the NCAA Regional weekend.

For the Jumbos (31-9, 8-4 NESCAC), Emmet Christian took the mound as the starting arm for his 11th start of the season. Christian fired a career-high 124 pitches and picked up his eighth win of his sophomore campaign with four strikeouts and one earned run allowed on eight hits in eight complete innings on the hill.

Mitchell tallied their only run of the game in the first inning as they took the early 1-0 advantage. Nicholas Bracale was hit by a pitch and moved to second after a single into left center from Michael Ficiocelli. Christopher Piscione then hit an RBI base knock up the middle to bring Bracale home.

In the bottom of the first, Tufts delivered a nine-run barrage to put the pressure on the Mariners right away. James Henshon walked to lead off and a Jack Kamin double to center field sent Henshon home. McKiernan (1), Cole Bohane (1), Caden Abraham (2), Jesse McCullough (1), Kamin (1), Tate Bannish (1), and Malcolm Whitfield (1) batted in the remaining runs in the inning.

The Jumbos stretched their lead to 11 in the bottom of the sixth with three runs in the inning. Henshon reached on a fielder's choice and stole the middle bag. Kamin registered his third RBI of the day after crossing Henshon home from second with a double into left center. Whitfield blasted a two-run shot to deep right center field for his first home run of the season and make it a 12-1 score.

Tufts tacked on a run in the seventh and a run in the eighth to push their advantage to 13 runs with RBI coming from Henshon and Tom Pender, respectively.

Mark Herlihy relieved Christian in the top of the ninth and allowed no runs on two hits with one strike out to close out the contest.

The Jumbos are back in action tomorrow against CMS in Game 4 at 2:30 PM.
