MEDFORD – Senior Kylene DeSmith of the Tufts women's indoor track & field team finished third in the pentathlon event to kick off the second annual Branwen Smith-King Invitational at the Gantcher Center on Friday evening.
In the five events, DeSmith compiled 2,975 points for a career-best in the multi-event. The Jumbos had three competitors overall with sophomores Hannah Norowitz and Scarlet Bliss also performing well, placing fourth (2,726) and fifth (2,723) respectively. Norowitz's score was a career best in the multi and Bliss was competing in her first-ever college pentathlon.
Shannon Kennedy from Connecticut College won the pentathlon with a 3,111 score ahead of second-place Katie Maehl from Wesleyan (2,995). Thirteen competitors were entered, with 12 finishing all five events.
DeSmith won the 60-meter hurdles and scored 850 points with a time of 9.29 seconds that was her career best in the event. She also had a career-best in the high jump, clearing 4'8 ¼" (1.43m) to score 544 points.
Bliss and Norowitz went 1-2 in the 800 meters with 2:26.72 and 2:29.40 times, respectively. Norowitz hit PRs in four of the five events and scored 700 points in the 800. Bliss competed in the 60 hurdles, shot put and long jump for the first time collegiately. Her 800 time earned 735 points.
