WILLIAMSTOWN -- The Tufts University golf team placed fifth at
the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Fall
Qualifying Tournament, from which the top four teams will move on
to play in the the conference championship next spring. The final
Jumbo tally of 625 strokes was a distance behind fourth-place
Middlebury's 608 score. Williams (595) and Hamilton (597) were the
top two teams. Trinity also qualified with a score of 603.
The tournament was held at Waubeeka Golf Links, where par is 71.
Day one play on Saturday had been delayed by rain and then
suspended due to darkness. Tufts was one of four teams that was
unable to complete its round. They resumed the first round on
Sunday at 9:30 am on the 17th hole.
The Jumbos were third after the first round with a score of 300.
Junior Luke
Heffernan (Arlington, MA) shot one-over 72 for Tufts,
while junior Dan Moll (Newton,
MA) hit a 74. Freshman Mike
McCarthy (Winchester, MA) was a stroke back at 75 and
senior Brett
Hershman (Worcester, MA) shot 80. They were nine
strokes behind first-round leader Hamilton's 291.
Tufts dropped out of a qualifying spot with a combined 625 on
Sunday. Heffernan's 79 was the only sub-80 round. His 151 overall
(+9) tied for 12th individually. Moll was the second-best Tufts
finisher overall at 74-80-154 (+12) to tie for 20th.
Hamilton's Phil Preiss shot an even-par 142 to top the field of
49 golfers this weekend.
