MEDFORD -- Sophomore Mimi Theodore (Walpole, MA) scored a goal
and set up a goal for the visiting Brandeis University Judges, who
won 2-0 at Tufts University in non-conference women's soccer action
on a very windy Wednesday afternoon at Kraft Field.
The victory ends a two-game losing streak for Brandeis (6-3-2),
who defeated Tufts for the first time since 2004 after four
straight losses. Tufts falls to 4-4 with their second straight
non-conference loss.
The Jumbos may have had a slight edge in forward movement early
in the game, but it was Brandeis that capitalized first. Junior
Tiffany Pacheco (Rehoboth, MA) sent a long shot from the right side
that Jumbo keeper Kate Minnehan (Hopkinton, NH)
saved, but could not control. Theodore was on the spot for the
rebound and tucked it under Minnehan at 25:13 for a 1-0 Judges
lead.
With 6:30 remaining until halftime, Tufts had its best
opportunity of the first 45. Sophomore Alix Michael (Mercer
Island, WA) dribbled through traffic and passed to
classmate Jamie Love-Nichols (Cortez, CO), but her
shot glanced off the post. Brandeis keeper Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca
Raton, FL) stopped a low attempt by Tufts junior Bailey Morgan (Universal City, TX) with out-stretched arms in the
final minute, keeping the Brandeis lead at 1-0 for halftime.
Shots were even 5-5 at the break. Rosenzweig had four saves for
Brandeis and Minnehan made three for Tufts.
The Jumbos hit metal again early in the second half when junior
Sarah Nolet (Los Altos, CA) drove a shot from
outside the box off the crossbar 12 minutes in.
Late in the period, a strong offensive run by Brandeis resulted
in the insurance goal. Theodore passed to junior Sofia Vallone
(Westport, CT) outside the 18, and her hard shot sailed into the
lower left corner in the 85th minute.
Brandeis finished with an 11-9 edge in shots, while Tufts held a
3-1 margin in corners. Both keepers made seven saves.
Tufts hosts Colby on Homecoming Day in Somerville Saturday at
3:30 pm. Brandeis plays under the lights on Saturday in a UAA game
against Rochester.
