MEDFORD -- The Tufts University men's swimming & diving team
and visiting Colorado College each won eight events apiece on
Friday night, but the Jumbos overwhelmed the Tigers with their
depth in a 187-105 victory at Hamilton Pool.
In the season-opener for Tufts, the 200 medley relay foursome of
junior Matt Glenn (Greenwood Village, CO), senior
quad-captain Lawrence Chan (Fresh Meadows, NY),
senior Patrick Kinsella (Hinsdale, IL), and junior
Andrew Altman (New Fairfield, CT) got things
started on the right foot by winning the inaugural event of the
2009-10 season with a 1:37.82 time. Altman came back to win the 100
backstroke three events later with a touch of 55.76 seconds.
The Colorado College trio of Devin Wahl, Jordan DeGayner and Tom
Grossinger combined to win four early events. Wahl was first in the
1,000 freestyle (10:27.62), Grossinger won the 100 breaststroke
(1:00.55) and DeGayner took both the 200 freestyle (1:45.56) and
the 200 butterfly (2:03.99).
Sophomore E.J. Testa (Cheshire, CT) and Chan
won the freestyle sprints for the Jumbos, with Testa's 22.68 in the
50 and Chan's 48.71 in the 100. Junior David Meyer
(Clarendon Hills, IL) added a victory in the 200
backstroke (2:05.16).
Tufts senior quad-captain Rob Matera (Trumbull,
CT) scored highest in both diving events. He earned 296.03
points off the 1-meter board and 310.80 in the 3-meter
competition.
Two more wins by Grossinger in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.36)
and in the 200 individual medley (2:03.36) were joined by Wahl's
500 freestyle victory in 5:00.73 and DeGayner's victorious time of
54.11 seconds in the 100 butterfly for Colorado College.
Coach Adam Hoyt's Jumbos put a cap on the victory by winning the
200 freestyle relay. A time of 1:27.55 was put out by sophomore
Owen Rood (Branford, CT), Testa, Meyer and
Kinsella.
Tufts gets right back at it when they travel to Middlebury
College tomorrow for a tri-meet that includes Connecticut College.
The action begins at 2:00 pm.
