CAMBRIDGE -- The Tufts University women's squash team opened the
season at Harvard with the Bobcats of Bates College visiting. Bates
earned a 9-0 victory.
With two-thirds of the team new starters, the Jumbos played a
strong match against higher ranked Bates. At #4, first-year
Alyse Vinoski (West Hartford, CT) in her first
college match took the second game, using her strong southpaw
drives. Much-improved sophomore Alix Michael (Mercer
Island, WA) at #2 scrambled and played close in the first
two games with her technically sound opponent Hannah Laverty. Tufts
junior tri-captain Erin Bruynell (Milton, MA),
also showing much improvement, was very close in her last two games
at #8.
In #1 match, junior Val Koo (Hong Kong, China)
hustled and moved her opponent Cheri-Ann Parris around well. But
Parris, the #1 junior out of the Caribbean, used her size, power
and technical skills to control the match in three exciting games.
Also making solid debuts for Tufts were first-years Ushashi
Basu (Darien, CT) and Jessica Rubine (Cranston,
RI).
Sitting out for Tufts were first year Madison Newbound
(Williamstown, MA) and senior tri-captain Stef
Marx (Cos Cob, CT) due to injuries.
The Jumbos play matches at Williams on Sunday against the hosts
and Middlebury.
