WILLIAMSTOWN -- The Tufts University women's squash team dropped
a pair of matches at Williams College on Sunday.
A strong Williams team that finished last season ranked eighth
nationally defeated the Jumbos 9-0. Sophomore Alix Michael
(Mercer Island, WA) won 15 points in the #2 match against
Jennifer Coxe, the 39th ranked player in the nation for the 2008-09
season. Tufts sophomore Mercedes Barba (New York,
NY) had 14 points while losing the #3 match.
Despite hard-fought matches, the Jumbos fell 9-0 to Middlebury.
The closest matches were in the top three as #3 Barba played three
close games, but couldn't capitalize. At #2, Michael scrambled well
and jumped to win in the first game 11-9. However, her momentum
didn't last and despite hitting great pace, she dropped the next
three and the match. At #1, junior Val Koo (Hong Kong,
China) moved her opponent around the court well and won
the second game 11-3 to level the match at 1-1. But too often she
got stuck behind her opponent and played defense.
The matches at Williams College were a homecoming for Tufts
first year Madison Newbound (Williamstown,
MA).
