Vanessa Miller's 11 points and five steals
helped Tufts to its 10th straight win

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Junior Colleen Hart (Needham,
MA) scored 19 points to lead four players who finished in
double-digits as the Tufts University women's basketball team
resumed its 2009-10 season with an easy 83-69 victory over
Allegheny College at the Land of Magic Classic on Monday
afternoon.
The win is the ninth in a row for Tufts, who have not lost since
a season-opening, double-overtime loss at SUNY New Paltz on
November 20. The Jumbos are approaching the school record of 12
consecutive victories set during the 2007-08 season. Allegheny's
Gators dropped to 4-6 overall.
Hart was good on eight of 14 shots in the game and also grabbed
a game-high nine rebounds. Senior Julia Baily (Farmington,
CT) added 14 points to the Tufts offense, while sophomore
Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) had 12 points and
four assists, and junior Vanessa Miller (Cincinnati,
OH) scored 11 points (five for eight on field goals) and
made five steals.
For the Gators, Heidi Goeller led the way with 16 points. Jill
Gregory finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Laura Magnelli scored eight points with five rebounds, and Emily
Simone contributed four points, four rebounds, three assists and
two steals.
The Jumbos jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never looked back.
Hart scored seven points during the opening stretch. Allegheny's
Heidi Goeller scored on a lay-up with 15:42 on the clock to make it
15-5. Tufts then scored the next 12 points, including
three-pointers by Barnosky and Miller, turning the lead into 27-5
with 12:27 remaining in the first half and the rout was on. The
Tufts advantaged hit 29 points twice in the first half and the
Jumbos led 53-25 at halftime.
In the second half, the Tufts lead topped out at 36 points,
67-31, on a lay-up by Hart with 14:39 remaining in the game. The
Gators out-scored the Jumbos 21-6 during the final eight minutes to
chop the final margin down to 14 points. Goeller scored nine points
to lead the strong finish.
After a free day in Florida tomorrow, the Jumbos play Concordia
University Wisconsin on Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm. Allegheny
returns to action at the Land of Magic Classic on Tuesday at noon
against Carroll.
