HENNIKER, N.H. -- Sophomore goalie Scott Barchard
(Reading, MA), building a reputation as one of the best
Division III puck stoppers in the country, made 52 saves on Friday
night to lead the Tufts University hockey team to a 3-1 victory at
New England College in a NESCAC/ECAC East game. The victory is the
third straight for Tufts.
Barchard now boasts a 2.15 goals against average and .952 save
percentage in six games for Tufts, who improved to 3-2-1 overall.
The victory was the first in league play for the Jumbos (1-1-1).
New England College, playing their home opener, dropped to 1-2-1
overall and in conference play. The Pilgrims out-shot the Jumbos
53-15, but Barchard had a spectacular 27 saves in the second period
along with 13 in the first and 12 in the third.
The game was scoreless for the first 31 minutes. With 8:13
remaining in the second period, Tufts senior Doug Wilson
(San Jose, CA) scored his first of the season on a
power-play, assisted by freshman Trevor John (Grosse
Pointe, MI).
John then scored his third of the season at 6:18 of the third
period, giving the Jumbos a 2-0 advantage. After Tufts killed off
NEC's fifth power-play of the game, and the Pilgrims nullified a
Jumbo extra-man opportunity, Tufts' Nick Metcalfe
(Stoneham, MA) scored his first collegiate goal with 8:38
to go in the third and the visitors led 3-0. Freshman Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ) had the assist, giving Jumbo
freshmae four points in the game.
The shutout was lost when NEC's Geoff Shewmake scored his first
goal of the year with 3:46 remaining in the third. Aaron Harvey
made 12 saves in the loss for the Pilgrims.
Tufts travels to Saint Anselm College for a Saturday afternoon
tilt at 3:00 pm. New England College hosts Connecticut College
tomorrow at 4:00 pm.
