CAMBRIDGE -- The Tufts University women's squash team took on
visiting Ivy League powerhouse Cornell for the first time in four
years on Saturday. Cornell just lost earlier in the day to Harvard,
but also gave many-time national champions Princeton a scare in a
5-4 loss just before Thanksgiving. The experience of Cornell proved
too much despite great hustle by the Jumbos, who lost 9-0.
At #1, Tufts junior Val Koo (Hong Kong, China)
played solidly and moved well to get to seven points in her third
game. Sophomore Alix Michael (Mercer Island, WA),
also a great mover, stayed with her opponent in a couple games.
First-year Madison Newbound (Williamstown, MA) at
#6 started off well with crisp drives to lose 11-5 in the first
game, but her opponent's steady play proved too much. For much of
the day, Cornell controlled the T and kept Tufts behind.
The match was the last of the first semester for Tufts. They
return to play on January 23-24 at the Mount Holyoke/Smith/Amherst
Round Robin tournament.
