WILLIAMSTOWN -- Junior Luke
Heffernan (Arlington, MA), senior Brett
Hershman (Worcester, MA) and freshman Mike
McCarthy (Winchester, MA) all shot sub-80 rounds on
both days to help the Tufts University golf team tie for 10th place
out of 16 teams at the Williams Invitational on Saturday and
Sunday.
The Jumbos moved up into the tie for 10th after finishing the
first day of competition in 13th place. The final Tufts total of
624 strokes tied with Western New England. Host Williams won the
event with 570 strokes.
On Saturday, Heffernan's 77 (par 70) was the low Tufts round,
followed by a 78 from Hershman and a 79 by McCarthy. Junior
Caleb
Shapiro (Larchmont, NY) also scored for Tufts with an
85 for a four-man total of 319.
Coach Bob Sheldon's team improved by 14 strokes on Sunday.
Heffernan and Hershman both shot two-over-par 74, McCarthy came in
at 78 and Shapiro had a nice round of 79. The Tufts total for
Sunday was 305.
Heffernan's two-day 151 (+11) tied for 24th overall among 86
golfers. Hershman at 152 (+12) tied for 29th and McCarthy (+17 157)
tied for 51st. Jeff Santora from Salem State College was the
individual medalist at 69-66-135 (-5).
Tufts travels to Middlebury College next weekend for the annual
Duke Nelson Invitational.
