Box Score
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Junior Kristy Benoit (Shrewsbury, MA)
scored the game's only goal less than two minutes in and junior
goalie Sarah Macary (Woodbury, CT) made eight saves in net as the
Babson College Beavers defeated the visiting Tufts University
Jumbos, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer contest at
Hartwell-Rogers Field on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Babson, ranked sixth in New England by the NSCAA,
improved to 7-3-1 overall, while Tufts slipped to 3-3-0.
The Beavers wasted little time in taking the lead, as sophomore
Annie Kenney (Weston, MA) hit a perfect thru ball up the middle to
Benoit. The junior striker then broke in all alone and chipped a
shot over the head of Tufts' senior keeper Kate Minnehan
(Hopkinton, NH) and into the back right corner for the
game's only goal at 1:52. It was Benoit's second goal of the
season.
Tufts would have the majority of scoring chances the rest of the
way, recording a 25-3 shot advantage in the contest. However, most
of the Jumbos' eight shots on goal were from well outside the box
and easily handled by Macary. Tufts' best chance came when senior
Fanna Gamal's (Albany, CA) shot from the top of
the box hit the crossbar at the 54-minute mark. Sophomore
Alix Michael (Mercer Island, WA) then had a
follow-up attempt, but Macary was there to make the save and
preserve the lead.
Macary finished with eight saves in earning her fifth shutout of
the season for the Beavers, while Minnehan stopped two shots in
goal for Tufts. The Babson defense was magnificent in the win, with
senior captain Kayla Pomponi (Belmont, MA), first-year Caroline
McManus (Walpole, MA), and first-year Nichole Vargas (Warren, RI)
all contributing huge plays in the final 25 minutes.
