MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Tufts University men's swimming &
diving team, fresh off a winter training trip to Fort Lauderdale,
returned to competition on Saturday in a tri-meet at Wesleyan with
Williams. The Jumbos defeated the host Cardinals, 217-82, but fell
to Williams, 172.5-127.5. Coach Adam Hoyt's Jumbos are 4-1
overall.
Jumbo swimmers and divers won five events overall. Senior
quad-captain Lawrence Chan (Fresh Meadows, NY) and
senior Patrick Kinsella (Hinsdale, IL) were each a
part of two victories. They were two of the four cogs in a 200
medley relay first-place finish (1:36.28). Sophomore E.J. Testa (Cheshire, CT) led off the group, followed by Chan
and Kinsella and then junior Gordy Jenkins (Kansas City,
MO) in the anchor spot. Chan then won the 100 breaststroke
individually (59.83 seconds) and Kinsella took the 100 butterfly in
53.02 seconds.
Chan also added two seconds to the Tufts tally. He tied for
second in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.70) and was the runner-up in
the 200 individual medley with a 2:00.05 touch. Kinsella led off
the Tufts 400 freestyle relay to end the meet, combining with
junior David Meyer (Clarendon Hills, IL), junior
Andrew Altman (New Fairfield, CT), and sophomore
Owen Rood (Branford, CT) for a second-place time
of 3:10.97.
Senior quad-captain Rob Matera (Trumbull, CT)
won both diving events. His 266.82 scored topped the one-meter
field, then he won the three-meter event with 287.90 points.
Other Jumbo second-place finishes came from Testa with a 54.88
seconds time in the 100 backstroke, Altman and Rood in a 50
freestyle tie (21.90 seconds), and freshman Brian Marko
(Barrington, IL) in the 200 butterfly (1:58.14).
The Jumbos host local rival MIT at Hamilton Pool next Saturday
