MEDFORD -- The Tufts University women's basketball team tied the
school record with its 12 consecutive victory on Saturday
afternoon, taking a 78-52 non-conference final over Bates College
at Cousens Gymnasium.
The Jumbos were led by 17 points each from senior forward Julia Baily (Farmington, CT) and junior guard Colleen Hart (Needham, MA).
Sophomore guard Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) finished with 16
points, and junior Vanessa Miller's (Cincinnati, OH) nine steals in
the game were the most by a Jumbo since December 2000. Tufts (12-1)
matched the 2007-08 squad's winning streak record and will attempt
to set a new mark next Friday night at Williams College in their
New England Small College Athletic Conference opener.
Bates (8-5), which lost its second straight, got a game-high 23
points from first-year Allie Beaulieu (Swampscott, MA). Senior
Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, MA) finished with 12 points, six
rebounds, and three blocked shots. Sophomore Annie Burns
(Topsfield, MA) recorded a game-high eight assists along with five
rebounds for the Bobcats.
The last lead of the game for the Bobcats came at the 14-minute
mark in the first half when a jumper by junior Jessie Igoe
(Lexington, MA) put the visitors up 15-14. Tufts then scored the
next 10 points and led 25-15 on a lay-up by sophomore Kate Barnosky
(Huntington Station, NY) with 9:32 on the clock. Bates twice cut
the gap to five points in the first half, including 34-29 on
Yanofsky's lay-up with 2:24 remaining until intermission. The Tufts
lead was 10 at the break (41-31), with 11 points by Hart and 14 by
Beaulieu leading their respective clubs.
Yanofsky's jumper to open the second-half scoring pulled the
margin into single-digits at 41-33, but Baily scored six points
during an 8-0 run that had the Jumbos leading 49-33 with 17:18 on
the clock. Bates twice narrowed the margin to 11 points, with Taryn
O'Connell's (Georgetown, MA) jumper making the score 55-44 at the
12-minute mark. Over the next six-plus minutes, the Jumbos put the
game away with a 16-3 stretch that was capped by Hart's
three-pointer giving the hosts a 71-47 advantage with 5:44
remaining. The margin soon hit 25 and both teams emptied their
benches for the final four minutes.
The Jumbos, who scored 27 points off 19 Bates turnovers, were led
defensively by Miller's nine steals. That's the most thefts since
Maritsa Christoudias had nine in a Tufts victory over Lasell on
December 3, 2000. Miller also finished with eight rebounds, seven
at the offensive end. Baily had a game-high 10 boards as the Jumbos
won that battle, 42-30. Tufts shot 53.3 percent (8/15) on
three-pointers, with Hart hitting four of nine.
Bates' Beaulieu was four for four on threes and finished nine for
11 from the field overall. Bates is at Colby for a non-league
contest on Tuesday night.
