It didin't take long in today's game for Anya
Kaufman to score her first college goal
|
SOMERVILLE - First year Anya Kaufman
(Evergreen, CO) scored the first goal of her college career just
moments after entering as a substitute in the first half, and it
stood up for a 1-0 Tufts Univeristy victory over Endicott College
in a well-played non-league women's soccer game at Kraft Field
Monday afternoon.
Sophomore Jenna
Castellot (Newton, MA) initiated the goal with a burst of speed
toward the left post. She passed to Kaufman in the middle, and her
shot snuck inside the right post in the 33rd minute.
Both teams had plenty of offensive opportunities in each half,
with the first 45 minutes featuring more open play. Prior to the
goal, Tufts junior Alix Michael
(Mercer Island, WA) got off a shot that Endicott first year keeper
Natalie Wyrsch (Dover, NH) reached to save. Later in the half, an
Endicott shot by Cheyenne Harris (Bernardsville, NJ) hit the
crossbar.
The best chance of the second half came midway through the
period off the foot of Endicott sophomore Vanessa Caruccio
(Winthrop, MA). Following a Tufts turnover in their own end,
Caruccio's dribbled and delivered a solid shot that was saved by
Jumbo first year goalie Kristin
Wright (Austin, TX) to preserve the lead. For Tufts, first year
Maeve
Stewart (Palo Alto, CA) later hit the post with a soft
shot.
The win was the fourth in a row for Tufts, and stretched their
unbeaten streak to five games. The current run is the best by the
Jumbos since they opened 2008 with five consecutive victories.
Endicott's eight-game winning streak came to an end, and the Gulls
(10-3-1) were shut out for just the second time this fall.
The Jumbos finished with a 13-10 advantage in shots, while
Endicott took two corner kicks to one for Tufts. Wyrsch finished
with five saves for the Gulls. Tufts starter Phoebe
Hanley (Mamaroneck, NY) earned the win and made three saves,
while Wright blocked two.
Tufts continues its NESCAC schedule on Saturday (Oct. 16) when
they travel to Trinity College for a noon match. Endicott is back
in action on Wednesday (Oct. 13) hosting Curry at 3:30 pm.
