BREWSTER -- Teams from 37 colleges and universities across New
England gathered Sunday through Tuesday (Oct. 17-19) for the 76th
annual New EnglandIntercollegiate Golf Championship. The event
attracted 182 golfers to The CaptainsGolf Course and its 36-hole
layout on Cape Cod.
The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) has
been in existence since
1934 and includes 44 member colleges and universities in New
England and is
considered to be the oldest and largest college golf tournament. It
is unique in that
Divisions I, II and III compete together.
Tufts tied for 30th overall with a two-day total of 666 strokes
on the par 72 course. Tufts recorded the same score as local rival
Brandeis.
The best Tufts round of the tournament was shot by senior Dan
Moll (Newton, MA), who had a 78 on Monday. He added an 81 on
Tuesday for a 159 total that tied for 69th overall, best for the
Jumbos.
Freshman Sebastian Vik (Oslo, Norway) had the best Jumbo score
on day two with an 80. Combined with his 83 on Monday, Vik tied for
94th with a 163 total. Senior Cal Shapiro (Mamaroneck, NY) scored
83 on Tuesday and 89 on Monday for a 172 total (tied for 144th).
Senior Luke Heffernan (Arlington, MA) carded a pair of 86's, also
finishing at 172 for the tournament.
Adam Vaccari of the University of Connecticut defeated Kevin
Josephson of Central
Connecticut State University on the second playoff hole to finish
as the individual
medalist with a score of 143 over the 36-hole tournament.
The University of Rhode Island (Div. I) , under the leadership
of retiring Coach Tom
Drennan, won the tournament for the 11th time in the last 13 years
with a two-day score
of 585 to edge the University of Connecticut by one stroke.
