Senior Megan Kono opened 2010-11 with wins in the 200 and 500 freestyles

MEDFORD - The Tufts University women's swimming & diving team received victories from seven first year performers during their 183-96 victory over Bates College on Friday night at Hamilton Pool. The win opened the 2010-11 season for Coach Nancy Bigelow's Jumbos.
Multiple victories came from first years Jen Konick (Salem, OR), Mia Greenwald (Park City, UT) and diver Sami Bloom (Wilton, CT). First year Jenny Hu (Oakland, CA) also won, while senior Megan Kono (LaGrange, IL) had two victories as Tufts won 11 of the 16 events overall.
Konick touched first in the 100 backstroke (1:02.64) and in the 200 backstroke (2:15.41). Greenwald started her career with butterfly wins in the 100 (59.77) and in the 50 (26.88). Bloom's 215.45 score won the one-meter diving competition, while her 225.75 mark was tops in three-meter.
Senior Maureen O'Neill (Cherry Hill, NJ) anchored a 200 medley relay also featuring Konick, Hu and Greenwald that got Tufts off on the right foot with a 1:52.47 win in the first event. Kono took the 200 freestyle with a 1:59.54 time early in the meet. A run of first-year victories for Tufts included Hu's 1:09.40 touch in th e100 breaststroke. Kono later won the 500 freestyle in 5:18.83, while sophomore Christine Garvey (West Chester, PA) also had a first in the 200 individual medley (2:17.25).
Charlotte Green from Bates proved to be the best freestyle sprinter at the meet, winning both the 50 in 25.44 seconds and the 100 in 54.88 seconds.
The Jumbos get on the bus tomorrow and travel to Connecticut College for a NESCAC tri-meet along with Middlebury. Bates likewise has a NESCAC tri-meet tomorrow, competing at Wesleyan with Trinity.
