WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Tufts (1-0) routed Lasell College (0-2), 88-34, in Saturday's first semi-final of the 2010 Eastern Connecticut State University Tip-Off Tournament. The Jumbos, who won the 2008 title in their first tournament appearance, taking down Eastern in the final by a 68-55 score, will face the hosts again on Sunday at 3 pm for the tournament title.
Coming off a 21-win season last year, Tufts crushed Lasell, which commited 27 turnovers and shot just 30 percent from the floor. Senior guard Colleen Hart (Needham, MA), the MVP of the tip-off tournament as a sophomore, had 14 points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks. Junior Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) enjoyed a strong all-around game with a game-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds and three etals. She was eight for 12 from the floor.
First year Liz Moynihan (Storrs, CT) had a fine debut for the Jumbos, making five of six shots including all three of her three-point attempts to score 13 points. Tufts shot 67.6 percent (23/34) from the floor in the first half when they took a 54-20 lead. The Jumbos finished at 58.3 percent (35/60) overall.
Kayla Vincelette led the Lasers with 10 points, going four for four on field goal attempts. Kim Archibald finished with 10 rebounds.
In the 2008 title game between the Jumbos and Warriors, Eastern shot 52.4 percent in assuming a three-point halftime lead but was limited to 20 second-half points on 32.1 percent shooting as the Jumbos pulled away over the final ten minutes.
