SALEM - Senior Colleen Hart (Needham, MA) scored 23 points to lead the Tufts University Jumbos to a 59-49 victory over the Salem State Vikings in a non-conference women's basketball match-up on Tuesday evening at Twohig Gymnasium.
Hart scored 10 second-half points to spur a 20-12 run to break open a close game down the stretch as Tufts (3-1) pulled away from a resilient Salem State (1-2) squad by 10 points. The Vikings had built a seven-point lead late in the first half behind the shooting of Madeline Park (Blue Hill, ME), who finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, before the Jumbos closed on a 7-0 run, led by Hart's five points and a steal and layup by first year Liz Moynihan (Storrs, CT) to tie the game at 23.
Moynihan and junior Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) were key in the second as half as Moynihan dropped in eight of her ten points in the period, and Kornegay went six for eight from the free throw line to finish with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Maggie Wallace (Lowell, MA) knocked in 10 points and Kristen Federico (Peabody, MA) added seven for the Vikings, who shot only 33% from the floor in the second half.
Tufts returns home on Saturday to play Colby-Sawyer beginnign at 2 pm. Salem State will host Plymouth State on Thursday 6 pm.
Hart is now 51 points shy of breaking the Tufts all-time scoring record of 1,257 points scored by Teresa Allen from 1985-89. The Jumbos have three games remaining in the first semester.
