MEDFORD - In a special 19-event meet between rivals Tufts and Wellesley on Wednesday night at Hamilton Pool, the Jumbos dominated and finished with a 172-117 victory after swimming several of the late events as exhibitions.
Tufts opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay with a 1:52.84 time. The Jumbo combo was first years Jen Konick (Salem, OR), Jenny Hu (Oakland, CA) and Mia Greenwald (Park City, UT) with senior Maureen O'Neill (Cherry Hill, NJ). Konick's 28.63 time in the 50 backstroke to lead off the relay is a new Hamilton Pool mark. Senior Megan Kono (LaGrance, IL) followed by taking the 1,000 freestyle with a 10:58.74 time, nearly 20 seconds faster than anyone else, and the Jumbos were on their way.
Tufts took the top two spots in the 200 freestyle, with juniors Valerie Eacret (Goleta, CA) and Courtney Adams (Lake Forest, IL) touching nearly simultaneously in 2:00.49 and 2:00.55, respectively. The hosts then posted a first year 1-2 as Konick won the 100 backstroke (1:01.76) with classmate Andrea Coniglio (Paramus, NJ) in second (1;04.41). Another 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke followed as sophomore Kathryn Sullivan (Bloomington, IN) won in 1:11.89 followed closely by Hu's 1:12.10.
The Jumbos made it six for six in event wins when sophomore Christine Garvey (West Chester, PA) won the 200 butterfly with a 2:14.59 finish. O'Neill, who will graduate in December and was swimming in her final home meet, won the 50 freestyle in 25.52 seconds. That came after Greenwald won 50 butterfly with a Hamilton Pool record time of 26.49 seconds.
Wellesley's lone victory of the meet came in the 100 freestyle when first year Mariam Amirkhanashvili (Salt Lake City, UT) touched in 56.15 seconds.
Tufts recorded another string of wins before discontinuing their scoring total. Coniglio picked up a win in the 200 backstroke with a 2:16.67 time, Konick won the 50 backstroke (29.15), Sullivan was first in the 200 breaststroke (2:34.84), Garvey got her second win in the 500 freestyle (5:22.54) and Eacret also doubled with her win in the 100 butterfly (1:00.66).
The fastest times in exhibition swims came from Jumbos Konick in the 50 breaststroke (28.87), Hu in the 200 individual medley (2:18.6) and Greenwald, junior Hannah Henderson (Portola, CA), junior Saheela Mehrotra (Taipei, Taiwan) and O'Neill with a 1:42.83 200 freestyle relay finish.
In diving, Tufts first year Sami Bloom (Wilton, CT) won off the one-meter board with 232.20 points. She also had the best total in three-meter, compiling a 267.74 score as an exhibition. That total surpassed the NCAA provision mark of 265 points.
The Jumbos swim at the MIT Invitational on Friday and Saturday to close their first semester of action. Wellesley (3-2) closes the semester at the Pioneer Valley Invitational hosted by Mount Holyoke on Saturday.
