LEWISTON, Me. -- The host Bates College women's basketball team
never trailed while earning a 71-55 upset victory against 13th
ranked Tufts University on Saturday afternoon in the NESCAC finale
for both squads. Bates junior Jessie Igoe scored a career-high 22
points, including a 10 for 11 performance at the free throw line,
to go with 11 rebounds.
With the loss, Tufts finished 6-3 in the conference and will be
the fourth seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The Jumbos
will host fifth seed Bowdoin College (19-5, 5-4 NESCAC) next
Saturday afternoon (Feb. 20) at 3:00 in the first round. Tufts, led
by 18 points from junior guard Colleen Hart (Needham,
MA) on Saturday, is 19-4 overall heading into their
regular-season finale on Tuesday at home against Worcester State
College.
It is the first win over a ranked team for the Bobcats (13-11,
4-5 NESCAC) since Jan. 13, 2006, when Bates knocked off then #2
Bowdoin 56-51. Bates earns the #6 seed in the NESCAC Championship.
The Bobcats will play at third-seed Williams (18-6, 7-2) in the
quarterfinal round, with the tip-off scheduled for 2 pm.
Bates had early leads of 10-2, 16-6, and 20-6 as Igoe and Lauren
Yanofsky started strong for the hosts. The Bobcats were up 29-15
with 7:31 to go until halftime when Tufts went on a 8-1 spurt to
get the margin into single-digits at 30-23 with 5:44 remaining
until halftime. Junior Lindsay Weiner (Rockville,
MD) and sophomore Kate Barnosky (Huntington
Station, NY) both had three-pointers for the Jumbos.
However, Bates retaliated with an 8-0 run, including five points
by Taryn O'Connell, to lead by 15 (38-23) with 1:15 on the clock.
They were up 40-28 at the break. Igoe had 15 points at intermission
for Bates and senior Julia Baily (Farmington, CT)
had 10 for Tufts.
Hart scored the first eight points of the second half, including
two three-pointers, to pull the Jumbos within 40-36. Tufts, who
defeated Bates 78-52 at home earlier this year on Jan. 9, seemed
poised to take over the game. Bates, though, responded with a 10-0
stretch led by six points from Yanofsky to push their advantage
back up to 14 (50-36) with 14:47 remaining in the second half. They
would lead by double-digits the rest of the way.
The Jumbos got within 10 at 64-54 on Hart's three-pointer at the
3:34 mark, but they could not get any closer and suffered their
first back-to-back losses since January 2007. Tufts lost at home to
#1 in the nation Amherst last Saturday.
Yanofsky added 12 points for Bates, while Annie Burns dished out
eight assists and had nine rebounds. Bates out-rebounded Tufts
44-33 and hit 20 of 25 foul shots, compared to a three of eight
performance at the line for the Jumbos.
Baily had her fourth consecutive double-double and her 11th of
the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go with three steals.
Barnosky recorded nine points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Against their NESCAC Championship quarterfinal round foes, Tufts
defeated Bowdoin 52-40 at home on January 23 and Bates lost 67-59
at Williams on January 16.
