WILLIAMSTOWN -- For the fourth time in the last five years, the
Tufts University men's swimming & diving team finished in
second place out of 11 at the NESCAC Championships this weekend at
Williams College. Coach Adam Hoyt's team won two conference titles,
broke three school records, and swam 11 NCAA "B" cut qualifying
times at the meet.
The Jumbos picked up their first conference title on Saturday
night when the 200 medley relay placed first. The foursome of
junior Michael DelMoro (Pequannock, NJ), junior
Zed Debbaut (Hood River, OR), senior
Patrick Kinsella (Hinsdale, IL), and sophomore
Owen Rood (Branford, CT) swam an NCAA "B" cut time
of 1:32.28 in the final to beat Amherst.
On Sunday, senior diver Rob Matera (Trumbull,
CT) won the NESCAC championship in three-meter diving.
After finishing third during the preliminaries with a 397.75 score,
he improved to 465.15 in the finals for the victory. He had been
the conference runner-up in three-meter diving for three
consecutive seasons before winning his first title this weekend.
Matera also placed third in Friday's one-meter diving event,
earning a score of 432.45 in the finals.
Rood enjoyed an excellent weekend individually, swimming three
potential national qualifying times. On Sunday, his time of 45.27
seconds in the finals of the 100 freestyle was a school record, was
third at the meet, and was an NCAA "B" cut. He broke his own school
record (45.53) from last year. Rood added a national "B" cut time
and third-place finish in the 200 freestyle on Saturday with a
1:41.77 time. He swam a national "B" cut and finished third at the
meet by posting a time of 20.85 seconds for the 50 freestyle on
Friday.
Also on Sunday night, Tufts swam an exhibition 200 free relay
with Middlebury to try for faster time to qualify for Nationals. No
points are awarded during this time trial, which is typically
allowed at the beginning or end of most of the sessions during the
conference meet. Rood led off the 200 free relay with a conference
and school record time of 20.33 seconds for the 50 free. He broke
the 11-year old conference mark of 20.42 seconds set by Williams
College's Fred Licon. It also improved upon his own Tufts record of
20.56 seconds from last season.
Sunday's 400 freestyle relay of Kinsella, junior David Meyer (Clarendon Hills, IL), junior Andrew Altman
(New Fairfield, CT), and Rood swam a 3:03.84 time that is
a new school record and national "B" qualifying time. They shaved
0.09 off the school record set last season and were fourth at the
meet.
Kinsella finished with two third-place efforts. On Friday in the
50 butterfly, he finished in 23 seconds flat for a third. The top
three finishers in each event earn All-NESCAC status. Also, on
Saturday his time of 50.66 seconds in the 100 butterfly was an NCAA
"B" qualifier.

Jenkins, and Altman hit the mark in the preliminaries with a
1:23.20 time. In the finals of the 400 medley relay, DelMoro,
