MEDFORD -- The #10 Tufts University Jumbos outlasted the Trinity
College Bantams, 68-58, in a game that was nip-and-tuck throughout
on Friday night in NESCAC women's basketball action at Cousens
Gymnasium.
Each team shot above 50 percent during the first half and the
first 20 minutes ended on a half-court three-pointer by Trinity
senior Claire Arnstein (Hicksville, NY) which tied the game at 35
apiece. Sophomore Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA)
and junior Colleen Hart (Needham, MA) each scored
in double-figures in the first half.
Neither team could establish momentum early in the second half
as there were four ties in the half, and seven overall for the
game. Tufts finally took the lead for good, 51-49, on a jumper by
senior Julia Baily (Farmington, CT) with 12:03
remaining. Baily collected a double-double with 15 points and 13
rebounds for the contest.
Tufts build its lead to nine with 5:40 left and continued on for
the victory being led by 21 points from Hart, who was four for six
from three-point range. Kornegay finished with 14 while junior
Vanessa Miller (Cincinnati, OH) cracked
double-figures with 10 points.
Arnstein finished as the leading scorer for the Bantams with 15
points. Sophomore Kaitlin Ciarleglio (Waterbury, CT) and first-year
Carly Napier (Pittsford, NY) both chipped in with 12 points apiece,
while senior Christine Card (Waterbury, CT) snagged a team-high 12
rebounds.
The Jumbos are now 19-2 overall and 6-1 in the NESCAC. They will
host #1 in the nation Amherst College on Saturday afternoon at 2
pm. Trinity moves on to play a NESCAC contest at Bates tomorrow at
2 pm.
