MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- After losing their first-round match to
Colby in the NESCAC Championships on Friday night, the Tufts
University women's squash team played a pair of loser's bracket
matches on Saturday and split the results. The #10 seed Jumbos lost
to ninth-seed Bowdoin 9-0, then defeated 11th seed Connecticut
College 6-3. The matches were played at Wesleyan University.
First-year Ushashi Basu's (Darien, CT)
five-game loss in the #7 match was the Jumbo highlight against
Bowdoin. She trailed 2-0 before battling back for 11-9 and 13-11
wins in the third and fourth games, respectively. She lost the
match by an 11-6 final in the fifth. Sophomore #3 Mercedes
Barba (New York, NY) and sophomore #5 Alyse
Vinoski (West Hartford, CT) both went four games in their
losses. Barba was tied 1-1 before a pair of 11-6 losses.
The Jumbos won an exciting match against the Camels. Playing
well for Tufts was Barba at #3, where she gave up 14 points in a
win. First-year Jess Rubine (Cranston, RI) at #4,
Vinoski at #5, and junior tri-captain Erin Bruynell
(Milton, MA) also won in straight games.
Sophomore Alix Michael (Mercer Island, WA) came
back from down 2-0 and senior Sairah Mahmud (Duxbury,
MA) rallied from behind 2-1 to win their matches in five
games at #2 and #9 respectively, essentially making the difference
in the match for Tufts.
Tufts (3-12) will host 10th ranked Brown University at MIT on
Tuesday night.
