MINNEAPOLIS -- With six All-American performances, the Tufts
University men's swimming & diving team tied for 18th place at
the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships held at Minnesota's
University Aquatic Center on Wednesday through Saturday.
On Wednesday, the opening day of the meet, the Jumbo 200 medley
relay foursome finished eighth in the finals to earn All-American
honors. The foursome consisted of junior Michael Del Moro
(Pequannock, NJ), junior Zed Debbaut (Hood River,
OR), senior Patrick Kinsella (Hinsdale,
IL), and sophomore Owen Rood (Branford,
CT). They swam the seventh-best time (1:31.89) in the
preliminaries, then put together a 1:32.29 finish in the final.
Rood took honorable mention All-American honors in the 50
freestyle on Wednesday. His time of 20.61 seconds in the
preliminaries was 0.02 out of eighth place, just missing a spot in
the championship final. He swam 20.44 seconds in the consolation
final for ninth place overall.
On Thursday, two Jumbo relays swam honorable mention
All-American times. In the 200 freestyle relay, the Tufts time of
1:23.68 in the consolation finals was good for 11th place. Rood,
junior Gordy Jenkins (Kansas City, MO), sophomore
E.J. Testa (Cheshire, CT), and Kinsella were the
foursome. They had been ninth in the preliminaries with a 1:23.20
time that was 0.10 away from qualifying for the championship finals
(top eight). The 400 medley relay of Del Moro, Debbaut, Kinsella,
and Rood was 14th in Thursday's consolation finals (3:25.36). That
time was almost a second and a half faster than their preliminary
time of 3:26.75, which was 13th.
Senior quad-captain Rob Matera (Trumbull, CT)
was also an honorable mention All-American on Wednesday in
three-meter diving. His 401.80 score in the preliminaries was 11th
best in the nation. In the consolation final, he scored 361.65 for
16th place. On Friday in the three-meter diving event, Matera
scored 402.90 in the preliminaries, missing qualifying for the
finals by two places with this 18th.
The team's sixth All-American effort of the week was the
honorable mention time of 6:55.67 in the 800 freestyle relay on
Friday. A busy Kinsella led off, followed by junior David Meyer (Clarendon Hills, IL), junior Andrew Altman
(New Fairfield, CT), and Testa.
Rood and Kinsella also swam in individual events on Thursday and
Saturday. Rood placed 20th in the 100 freestyle on Saturday with a
time of 46.03 seconds, slightly more than a fifth of a second away
from All-American honors. On Thursday he had touched 50th in the
200 freestyle with a 1:44.16 finish. Kinsella was 41st in
Thursday's 100 butterfly with a time of 51.89 seconds. He came in
43rd for the 100 free on Saturday (47.20). Also, Debbaut was 24th
in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.86 seconds, while Del
Moro finished the 100 backstroke in 52.06 seconds for 28th place,
both on Friday.
The Jumbos had an unfortunately conclusion to the meet on
Saturday, as the 400 freestyle relay was disqualified in the
preliminaries. They finished the four-day meet by scoring 51 points
to tie with SUNY Oswego. Kenyon College on the NCAA
Championship.
