TROY, N.Y. -- Senior Emily Johnson (Yarmouth,
ME) scored six goals with five assists for 11 points to
tie the single-game scoring record, leading a high-powered attack
for the #13 Tufts women's lacrosse team in a 20-13 victory over
Buffalo State College on Wednesday afternoon. The game was played
at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Johnson became the fourth Tufts player to score 11 points in a
game. She is the first to do it in 14 years, when all-time leading
screr Rebecca Black had 11 points in back-to-back games against
Mount Holyoke and Wesleyan on March 28 and March 30, 1996.
Christina Doykos was the other Jumbo to do it, against Babson in
1993.
The Jumbos (2-2) scored the last three goals of the first half
to open up a 12-7 lead on the Bengals (3-1), including sophomore
Casey Egan's (Massapequa, NY) goal with three
seconds remaining until halftime.
Buffalo State cut the margin down to a goal at 12-11 by scoring
the first four in the second half. Kendyl Clarkson scored once and
had three assists during the run, while Molly Seifritz had two
goals.
However, Tufts netted seven of the next eight goals to take a
comfortable 19-12 advantage with 8:12 to go in regulation. The
scoring was spread out during the stretch, with only first-year
Kerry Eaton (Norfolk, MA) tallying twice.
Senior co-captain Jenna Abelli (Framingham, MA)
scored four goals with an assist for Tufts, who hit a season-high
with their 20 goals. Senior co-captain Alyssa Kopp (Hollis,
NH) and sophomore Steph Perez (East Providence,
RI) both had four ground balls and four draw controls for
Tufts. Junior Sara Bloom (Summit, NJ) got the win
in goal with four saves, while first-year Tess Shapanka
(Sudbury, MA) came on for the save with one stop in the
final seven minutes.
Clarkson finished with two goals and six assists for the
Bengals. Karen Shaddock scored four goals with two assists and
impressively controlled 11 draws. Goalie Ashley O'Brien made 10
saves and led Buffalo State with five ground balls.
Tufts finished with a 43-22 advantage in shots, 31-22 in ground
balls, and 19-16 in draw controls. The Jumbos scored four
free-position goals, including three in a row during their
late-game run to pull away. Tufts turned the ball over only seven
times, compared to 21 by the Bengals.
The Jumbos travel to Williams on Saturday for an 11:30 NESCAC
game. Buffalo State hosts Middlebury at RPI on Thursday.
