MEDFORD -- Senior 1B Nate Bankoff (Lynnfield,
MA) had two doubles driving in three runs, leading the
Tufts University baseball team to a 5-4 victory against Wesleyan
University in the first round of the NESCAC Championship on Friday
afternoon at Huskins Field.
The Jumbos advance in the winner's bracket to play Williams
College on Saturday morning at Huskins Field beginning at 10:30 am.
The Ephs defeated Bowdoin College in Friday afternoon's other
first-round game at Bentley College, 15-5. Wesleyan and Bowdoin
will play an elimination game at Bentley on Saturday at 10:30
am.
With the game tied 1-1 in the fifth inning, Bankoff drilled a
two-run double to right-center field to put Tufts up 3-1. He then
scored on a single up the middle by senior catcher Alex Perry (Danvers, MA) and the Jumbos led 4-1.
Wesleyan narrowed the margin to 4-2 with back-to-back doubles in
the top of the sixth by junior 3B Derek Dettorre (Wakefield, MA)
and senior RF Brice Kelly (Austin, TX).
Tufts added what would become a very important run in the
seventh when Perry walked and darted all the way around to score on
a close play at the plate after a double by junior 2B Frank
Petroskey (Dallas, TX).
Tufts starter Kevin Gilchrist (Medford, MA)
pitched into the eighth before being lifted with two outs.
Sophomore closer Chris DeGoti (Miami, FL) entered
and was greeted by Kelly's single and a two-run double by junior 1B
Joe Giaimo (Gillette, NJ) that brought the Cardinals within 5-4.
DeGoti got a ground out to first with the tying run on second to
end the inning. He struck out the side in the ninth to earn his
10th save.
The early-going was mound duel between Gilchrist and Wesleyan
sophomore Mike Barsotti (Philadelphia, PA). Both teams had a runner
picked off second base in the first inning. Gilchrist retired 10
straight from the first into the fourth. Barsotti allowed the
game's first run in the third on an error, a hit-by-pitch, and a
bloop double by Bankoff.
Wes tied the score at 1-1 after two were out in fourth. Kelly
walked, went to second on a single by Giamio, and scored on a base
hit by sophomore DH David Skura (Beverly Hills, CA).
Tufts (29-5) got a 3 for 5 game from junior RF Chase Rose (Scottsdale, AZ), and two-hit efforts from Bankoff,
Perry, and Petroskey. The Jumbos had 10 hits overall. Gilchrist
improved to 5-0, allowing six hits and three runs with seven
strikeouts and five walks in 7.2 innings.
Kelly and Giaimo each had two of Wesleyan's eight hits.
Barsotti, a workhorse who threw in the neighborhood of 150 pitches,
hurled a complete-game loss. He allowed 10 hits and four earned
runs with five strikeouts and three walks in eight innings.
