MEDFORD - The Tufts University women's soccer team stopped a
four-game winless streak by controlling play against Babson College
on Wednesday afternoon at Kraft Field and coming away with a 1-0
victory.
The Jumbos finished with a 31-5 advantage in shots, including
14-1 on goal. Tufts forced Babson junior goalkeeper Lisa Wojnar
(Bellaire, TX) to make 13 saves. The Jumbos also had an 11-4 margin
in corner kicks.
Wojnar made five saves in the first half, with the best coming
late after Tufts first year Anya Kaufman
(Evergreen, CO) crossed the ball to classmate Sophie
Wojtasinski (Duxbury, MA). Wojnar was there to make the save
and the game went to halftime scoreless. The Jumbos were up 12-3 in
shots for the first 45 minutes. Sophomore starting goalie Phoebe
Hanley (Mamaroneck, NY) made one save for Tufts in the first
half on Babson's Annie Kenney (Weston, MA).
Tufts had their most sustained pressure early in the second
half, and it would eventually lead to their goal. The Jumbos had
three corners in the first five minutes and shots close-in by
senior Sarah Nolet
(Los Altos, CA) and junior Cleo Hirsch
(Hull, MA) were saved by Wojnar.
Ten minutes into the half, the Jumbos broke through when junior
Jamie
Love-Nichols (Cortez, CO) took a pass by Wojtasinski from the
midfield and kicked it in under the crossbar for a 1-0 Tufts lead.
The goal was just the second scored against the Beavers in their
last eight games.
Babson would get its best chance of the game to tie it when a
cross to senior Ellen McCurdy (Weston, MA) was headed just high
with 11 minutes remaining. Tufts was able able to close out the
victory, with first-year goalie Kristin
Wright (Austin, TX) earning her first collegiate win without
having to make a save.
Leading the offensive opportunities for Tufts was first year
Maeve Stewart (Palo Alto, CA), who put three shots on goal.
The Jumbos, who had been 0-2-2 since a 3-0 win against
Middlebury to open the season on September 11, host their
Homecoming Game against Bates College on Saturday at noon. Babson
plays a NEWMAC game at WPI on Saturday at 6 pm.
