JUMBOS IMPROVE TO 5-4 WITH VICTORY OVER WELLESLEY IN RETURN TO ACTION

Junior Mercedes Barba recorded one of the five Tufts wins

BELMONT - The #23 Tufts University women's squash team opened its second semester of action on Thursday with a close 5-4 victory against 27th ranked Wellesley College in a match played at the Belmont Hill School.

The win is the second in a row for Tufts, which improved to a 5-4 record overall. The Blue had now lost 14 consecutive matches and fell to 4-14 overall. It is the second win of the season for Tufts against Wellesley, including a 6-3 match played on December 2.

The Jumbos had victories in five of the top six spots to secure the win on Thursday night. Sophomore #4 Jessica Rubine (Cranston, RI) won her second and third games by 11-0 scores after taking the first 11-5. Junior Mercedes Barba (New York, NY) was also an efficient winner, allowing just 13 points while taking the third match.

On the other hand, sophomore Ushashi Basu (Darien, CT) went four games for her win, losing 11-8 in the third game before ending the match with an 11-2 final in the fourth game. Senior Val Koo (Hong Kong, China) won a competitive #2 match in three games.

Tufts has a busy weekend in front of them with a pair of matches at Amherst on Saturday and two more at Yale on Sunday.
