MEDFORD - The Tufts University men's swimming and diving team sent their seniors out on a high note in Saturday's dominating win against Wheaton College. The Jumbos won 15 out of 16 events including multiple 1, 2, 3 finishes. This was the final home meet of the season and was the senior recognition meet. The Jumbos won 188-105.
The Jumbo "B" 400 medley relay of Brian Marko (Barrington, IL), senior Zed Debbaut (Hood River, OR), senior Eddie Mayerson (Teaneck, NJ) and senior Joe Lessard (Framingham, MA) won a close race against the Tufts "A" relay 3:39.36 to 3:39.47. In the 1,000 freestyle the Jumbos went 1, 2, 3 with Christian Jones (Lewisville, NC), Matthew Wiens (Mercer Island, WA), and Lou Tamposi (Lecanto, Fl) leading the charge.
Lessard came back and won the 200 yard freestyle with a season best 1:47.70 followed by Drew Berman (Miami, FL) and Joe McLoughlin (North Eastham, MA) to round out the top three.
Senior Gordon Jenkins (Kansas City, MO) won the 50 breaststroke in 27.59, just off his third ranked time in the conference. Jenkins also won the 50 freestyle in 21.82 just ahead of senior Andrew Altman (New Fairfield, CT) who finished in 22.10. Brandon Ching (Honolulu, HI) won the 50 butterfly with a 24.14 which is the fifth fastest time in the conference this year.
Mathew Richmond (Portland, OR) won the 100 breaststoke in 1:04.67 just ahead of senior David Meyer (Clarendon Hills, IL) who finished in 1:04.96. Alex Strittmatter (Fairfield, CT) won the 500 freestyle ahead of last week's NESCAC swimmer of the week Owen Rood (Branford, CT) who showed some versatility with a second place effort of 5:01.43.
To end the season the senior men competed in the 100 IM where Jenkins barely defeated Meyer and Lessard. Jenkins time of 55.68 is the second fastest time in the conference this year.
Coach Adam Hoyt used the final relay as a battle between the junior, sophomore and freshman classes. The junior class won the event in 1:27.36 with Ching, E. J. Testa (Cheshire, CT), Peter Debbaut (Hood River, OR) and Rood handily defeating the second place freshmen.
Johan Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) won both the 1 meter and 3 meter diving events.
Senior Brian Canter (Willow Grove, PA) said, "It was an excellent way to send out the senior class" and believes it is a good indication of the fast swimming you will see from the Jumbos during the upcoming championship season.
The Jumbos are next in action next weekend February 4th and 5th at the Wheaton Invite.
