BREWSTER - The Tufts golf team placed 29th out of 34 teams at the 77th Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Championship held on Monday and Tuesday at The Captains Golf Course. With their four best scores on both days, the Jumbos compiled a total of 666 strokes.
At a banquet held on Sunday evening at The Irish Village Restaurant, Tufts coach Bob Sheldon was announced as the Gordon McCullough (Coach) Award recipient. The McCullough Award is presented annually to a coach for outstanding dedication to college golf, and for contributions to players, fellow coaches and golf committees at local and regional levels.
Freshman John Wawer (Litchfield, CT) performed best for Tufts with a two-day total of 155 to tie for 32nd place. His three-over par 75 on Tuesday was the best Jumbo round of the tournament. Freshman Harrison Odaniell (St. Louis, MO) and classmate Alex Zorniger (Dayton, OH) shot identical 82-84-166's to score on both days for Tufts.
Steven Zychowski of The College of the Holy Cross was the medalist by one shot with a two-day score of 146. Zychowski started Tuesday in a three-way tie after shooting a 1-under 71 on the Port Course Monday. Division II Bentley University, under the leadership of Coach Mickey Herron, won the overall championship with a two-day score of 606. Bentley started Tuesday four strokes behind Bryant and Holy Cross. Division I Bryant University led the Division I teams with a score of 607. The Division III champion with a total of 617 was Salem State University.
The Jumbos will continue their 2011-12 season in the spring.
