MIDDLEBURY, VT - In a close competition at Middlebury College with Connecticut College, the Tufts Jumbos split a NESCAC women's swimming & diving tri-meet to open the 2011-12 season on Saturday afternoon. The Jumbos defeated the Camels 150-147, but lost against the host Panthers 152-148.
Sophomore diver Sami Bloom (Wilton, CT) won both events to lead the Jumbos in scoring. She had a 224.10 score to beat out seven other competitors in one-meter diving. Jumbo senior Kelly Flanagan (Boxborough, MA) placed second at 191.25 points. Bloom later won off the three-meter board with a 204.45 score.
First-year Kathryn Coniglio (Branchburg, NJ) had a good opening meet for Coach Nancy Bigelow's Tufts squad. She anchored the Jumbos in the final event of the day, the 200 freestyle relay won by Tufts in a 1:40.50 time. She also was the runner-up in the 50 freestyle individually with a time of 25.31 seconds.
Senior co-captain Courtney Adams (Lake Forest, IL) led off the 200 free relay, followed by first-years Samantha Sliwinski (Weymouth, MA), Scarlett Hao (Lexington, MA) and Coniglio. In the fourth spot, Coniglio's 24.83 50 was the Jumbos' fastest time in the event.
Sliwinski, who had timed 24.85 in her 50-yard leg of the 200 free relay, added a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle. She clocked 55.52 seconds.
Barlely off the bus home from Vermont, Tufts opens its home schedule on Sunday at 1 pm against Keene State College.
