Adams Wins Both Freestyle Sprints as Women's Swimming & Diving Defeats Wellesley

Co-captain Courtney Adams was a part of three wins for the Jumbos

WELLESLEY - Senior co-captain Courtney Adams (Lake Forest, IL) won the 50 and 100 freestyles, and then swam the lead leg in the first-place 200 freestyle relay as the Tufts women's swimming & diving team won 180-119 at Wellesley College on Wednesday night.

Adams won the 50 freestyle in 25.48 seconds and then took the 100 freestyle (55.41) in back-to-back races. The Jumbos closed the meet with a 1:41.54 time in the 200 free relay. Adams was joined by senior Paulina Ziolek (Londonderry, NH), first-year Samantha Sliwinski (Weymouth, MA) and first-year Kathryn Coniglio (Branchburg, NJ). Sliwinski's 24.91 50 was the fastest Jumbo swim.

In addition to contributing to the free relay win, Ziolek was first in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:23.72 time. Other individual event winners for Tufts were junior Christine Garvey (West Chester, PA) in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:57.60, senior co-captain Valerie Eacret (Goleta, CA) in the 200 freestyle (2:00.62), senior Katie Russell (Bethesda, MD) with a 5:24.92 in the 500 freestyle and first-year Scarlett Hao (Lexington, MA) in the 200 individual medley with a 2:18.14 touch.

Coach Nancy Bigelow's Jumbos had opened the meet with a 1:53.47 victory in the 200 medley relay. Sliwinski was also a part of that relay win, handling the freestyle leg. The Jumbos had junior KJ Kroetch (Lafayette, CA) in the backstroke, sophomore Ellen Gage (Storrs, CT) in the breaststroke and sophomore Mia Greenwald (Park City, UT) in the butterfly.

Six Jumbos who had wins at the meet also added runner-up efforts: Gage in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.27), Greenwald in the 100 butterfly (1:00.47), Sliwinski in the 200 freestyle (56.12), Garvey in the 500 free (5:27.40), Russell in the 200 fly (2:17.36) and Coniglio in the 200 freestyle (2:01.10).

For Wellesley, sophomore Keelin Nave and first-year Veronica Lin each picked up two wins. Nave won the 100 fly in 2:11.60, while taking the 200 fly in 59.85. Lin and classmate Tiffany Chen went 1-2 in both the 100 back and the 200 back, as Lin recorded times of 1:03.36 (100) and 2:16.17 (200), and Chen went 1:03.99 (100) and 2:17.84 (200).

At the diving end of the pool, Wellesley's Hayley Goydan continued her fantastic season with a sweep of the diving events. The sophomore recorded an NCAA qualifying score of 286.72 on the 3-meter board, while winning the 1-meter event with a score of 281.32.
