CAMBRIDGE - The Tufts women's swimming & diving team posted top-five finishes in five relay events, and sophomore Mia Greenwald (Park City, UT) scored well in the butterfly events, as the Jumbos placed third out of seven teams at the MIT Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Tufts had its best relay performance with its 200 freestyle foursome of senior co-captain Courtney Adams (Lake Forest, IL), first-year Samantha Sliwinski (Weymouth, MA), senior Paulina Ziolek (Londonderry, NH) and first-year Kathryn Coniglio (Branchburg, NJ) placing third with a 1:39.20 time. Both Adams and Coniglio would be a part of all five relays that earned top-five finishes.
In a meet featuring very strong teams from MIT and NYU, Greenwald was the top individual performer for Tufts. She placed third in the 200 butterfly (2:13.15) and fourth in the 100 fly (59.27).
Greenwald was also a relay participant in the 200 and 400 medleys that both finished fourth. The 200, which swam a time of 1:51.40, included Coniglio, then sophomore Jenny Hu (Oakland, CA), then Greenwald and then Adams. A 4:06.53 time in the 400 medley relay was recorded by Coniglio, Hu, Greenwald and Adams.
Sliwinski, Adams, first-year Scarlett Hao (Lexington, MA) and Coniglio timed 3:41.73 in the 400 freestyle relay for fourth place. The fifth-place Jumbo team in the 800 free relay (8:09.11) was Adams, junior Christine Garvey (West Chester, PA), Coniglio and Sliwinski.
Sophomore diver Sami Bloom (Wilton, CT) had fifth-place efforts in both events. She scored 208.85 in the one-meter competition and 208.75 in three-meter.
The Jumbos scored 864 points during three sessions at the invitational to place third. Host MIT won the seven-team event with 1,308 points.
The meet was the last action of the first semester for Coach Nancy Bigelow's squad. They will next compete at Wesleyan with Williams on January 14.
