PRINCETON, N.J. - The Tufts women's squash team finished its 2010-11 team schedule on Sunday with a solid 6-3 victory against Vassar to win the consolation final of the Walker Cup at Princeton University. The Jumbos finished the season with a 9-14 record.
Just a week earlier, Tufts had taken a 6-3 loss at Vassar on February 13. Seeded 24th overall at the Howe Cup team championships, and eighth in the Walker Cup, the win gave Tufts a fifth-place finish in the division and a 21st place overall. Tufts had posted a good 5-4 victory against Colby on Saturday after losing twice to the Mules previously this season.
Against Vassar, the Jumbos won the top six matches. All were challenges, including four-game wins by junior Alix Michael (Mercer Island, WA) at #1, sophomore Jess Rubine (Cranston, RI) at #4 and sophomore Ushashi Basu (Darien, CT) at #6. Basu clinched her match with a 12-10 final in the fourth game.
In three-game victories by senior co-captain Valerie Koo (Hong Kong, China) at #2, junior co-captain Mercedes Barba (New York, NY) at #3 and junioir Alyse Vinosky (West Hartford, CT) at #5, Barba's 22 points allowed were the fewest.
Sophomore Hafsa Chaudhry (Westwood, MA) lost the #7 match in five games.
