GOLF OPENS SPRING SEASON WITH EIGHTH PLACE AT UMASS DARTMOUTH'S INVITATIONAL

NORTH DARTMOUTH - The Tufts University golf team began its 2011 season over the weekend at the Hampton Inn Spring Invitational hosted by UMass Dartmouth at the par 72 Allendale Country Club. The Jumbos placed eighth out of 18 teams with a two-day score of 676 strokes.

The Jumbos were led by senior Dan Moll (Newton, MA), who shot a 79 on Satuday and an 81 on Sunday for a 160 total (+16) that tied for ninth individually. The 79 was the best Jumbo round of the weekend.

Freshman Sebastian Vik (Oslo, Norway) shot an 86 on Saturday and an 81 on Sunday for a two-day 167 (+23) that tied for 31st overall. The Jumbos also used both day's scores from senior Caleb Shapiro (Mamaroneck, NY), who finished with a 174 total.

Tufts' 348 (best four scores) for Saturday also included a 93 by senior Luke Heffernan (Arlington, MA). The Jumbos were 10th after one day. They improved by 20 strokes on Sunday with a 328 total, including an 82 by senior Lindsay Walker (Castlegar, BC).

Salem State won the invitational with a 316-321-637. Four players tied for medalist honors with 155 scores.

On Thursday, Tufts plays in the WNEC Invitational at Springfield.
