Junior co-captain Bre Dufault grabbed seven offensive rebounds for the Jumbos

MEDFORD - Bowdoin first-year Sara Binkhorst hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 56 seconds remaining as the Polar Bears closed the game on a 7-2 run to defeat Tufts 57-56 in New England Small College Athletic Conference action on Friday evening at Cousens Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears snap the Jumbos' 11-game winning streak and improve to 10-3 (2-0 NESCAC) this season. Tufts, who had not lost since November 20, dips to 11-3 (2-1 NESCAC).
Bowdoin's Jill Henrikson led all players with 19 points while also grabbing five rebounds. Binkhorst finished with 15 points while Amy Hackett pitched in 10 for the Polar Bears. Seven players scored at least five points for the Jumbos, led by 13 off the bench from sophomore Liz Monynihan (Storrs, CT). Senior Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) had six points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four steals for Tufts in the loss.
After a back-and-forth first half that saw the hosts carry a 32-29 edge into the break, a pair of baskets by Kornegay and first-year Kelsey Morehead (Foster City, CA) quickly pushed the Tufts lead to seven points, 36-29, with 18:30 remaining. Bowdoin quickly responded with a driving lay-in by Binkhorst and a three-pointer from Henrikson to close the gap back to two points.
Neither team could muster more than a four-point edge either way for the remainder of the game as the Jumbos carried a 54-50 lead after a Kornegay layup with 1:55 to go. Henrikson was fouled and hit two free throws to trim the lead to a single point on Bowdoin's next possession.
After a block by Bowdoin's Alexa Barry, Binkhorst netted the go-ahead trifecta with 56 ticks remaining. Henrikson swiped the ball on Tufts' next possession and netted a lay-in to make it 57-54 Polar Bears with 32 seconds on the clock.
Senior co-captain Kate Barnosky (Huntington Station, NY) drove the hoop for a lay-in for Tufts with 23 seconds left, cutting the lead to 57-56, and Tufts was able to steal the ensuing inbounds pass from Bowdoin after a time-out, but immediately turned the ball back over.
After a missed Polar Bear free throw, Kornegay drove up the floor and got the ball to Bre Dufault (Hampden, MA), but her layup missed at the buzzer to give Bowdoin the win.
Tufts held a massive 41-29 edge on the glass, but Bowdoin connected on 51.2 percent of its shots (22/43) for the contest. The Polar Bears went 10 for 20 from the free throw line, while Tufts went to the charity stripe just three times in the game.
Both teams return to action tomorow, with Tufts hosting Colby at 2 pm and Bowdoin visiting Bates at 2 pm.
