MEDFORD - The Tufts University men's swimming and diving team celebrated their seniors at their last home meet of the season today at Hamilton Pool. The Jumbos fell to the MIT Engineers 248-119.
Jumbo seniors Brandon Ching (Honolulu, HI) and Owen Rood (Branford, CT) won individual events on the afternoon. Ching touched first in the 50-yard butterfly in 24.02 seconds and Rood in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.88 seconds. Sophomore diver Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) captured both the one- and three-meter diving events that were contested on Friday at MIT. He scored 290.24 in one-meter and 326.48 in three-meter.
There were a number of second-place finishes for the Jumbos, including the opening 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Kyle Savidge (South Windsor, CT), sophomore Drew Berman (Miami, FL), Ching and Rood finished with a time of 1:37.25. Savidge also finished second in the 50-yard backstroke in 25.51 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.42. Ching also finished second in the 100-yard individual medley in 55.69.
The relay team of sophomore Austin Wood (Fort Washington, PA), Berman, freshman Will Parker (Frederick, MD) and freshman John Devine (Oxford, MA) finished off the meet finishing second in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:28.43.
Other top performers for the Jumbos included Berman, who finished third in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.58, senior co-captain Joe McLoughlin (North Eastham, MA) who finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:19.49, freshman John Patterson (Akron, OH) who finished third in the 50-yard backstroke (26.87), and sophomore Christian Jones who finished third in 200-yard backstroke in 2:03.43.
The Jumbos (3-3) are next in action at Boston College on Tuesday. MIT (6-0) hosts Amherst College next on Saturday (Jan. 28) at 1 pm
