MEDFORD - Four Jumbos won events and several others were runners-up, but MIT proved too strong and won 217.5 to 158.5 in non-league women's swimming and diving action at Hamilton Pool on Saturday afternoon. Tufts also saluted nine senior athletes in their final home meet.
In the diving events held at MIT last night, senior Kelly Flanagan (Boxborough, MA) won off the three-meter board for Tufts with a 268.20 score. That mark, along with sophomore Sami Bloom's (Wilton, CT) runner-up score of 265.36, met the national qualifying standard. Bloom was also second with a 252.97 score in one-meter diving.
On Saturday, three Tufts swimmers were winners. Sophomore Mia Greenwald (Park City, UT) took first in the 50 butterfly with a time of 26.83 seconds. Sophomore Ellen Gage (Storrs, CT) was first in the 200 breaststroke (2:34.22). First-year Samantha Sliwinski (Weymouth, MA) won the 100 freestyle touching in 55.28 seconds.
Sophomore Jenny Hu (Oakland, CA) had a strong day with four second-place races. She was the second leg of the runner-up 200 medley relay that opened the meet with a 1:51.82 time. Junior KJ Kroetch (Lafayette, CA) led off, Greenwald was third and Sliwinski was the anchor. Hu also had seconds in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.50), the 50 breaststroke (31.61) and the 200 individual medley (1:05.47).
Senior co-captain Courtney Adams (Lake Forest, IL) was second to the wall in both the 200 freestyle and 50 freestyle, with times of 1:58.94 and 25.43 respectively. She also swam the first leg of the 200 freestyle relay foursome that closed the meet with a 1:40.44 finish for second place. Senior Paulina Ziolek (Londonderry, NH) was second, Sliwinski swam third and first-year Kathryn Coniglio (Branchburg, NJ) was the anchor.
In the butterflies, Greenwald placed second in the 100 at 59.85 seconds while junior Lizz Grainger (Nashville, TX) was the runner-up in the 200 with a 2:19.08 finish. Assorted other Jumbo seconds included senior Katie Russell (Bethesda, MD) with an 11:00.17 swim in the 1,000 freestyle, first-year Amanda Wachenfeld's (Basking Ridge, NY) 2:19.86 in the 200 individual medley and a 29.47 50 backstroke by Coniglio.
For MIT, junior Anna Kokensparger (Omaha, NE) and sophomore Christy Rogers (Bend, OR) were both a part of five victories. They both swam in the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Kokensparger individually won the 200 butterfly, the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley. Rogers was first in the 100 breaststroke, the 50 freestyle and the 50 breaststroke.
Tufts, who now has a 3-4 dual meet record, competes at Wheaton with WPI next Saturday (Jan. 28). MIT, 7-0 in dual meets, welcomes Amherst to Cambridge next Saturday.
