Sophomore Craig Olynyk was first in the 50 backstroke for Tufts

CHESTNUT HILL - The Jumbo men's swimming & diving team had three individual wins on Tuesday night in a 193-173 loss at Division I Boston College. Senior co-captain Owen Rood (Branford, CT), sophomore Craig Olynyk (Redmond, WA) and sophomore Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) each picked up a victory.
Rood won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.24 seconds, Olynyk was victorious in the 50-yard backstroke in 26.53 seconds and Schmidt took first on the three-meter diving board with a score of 278.10.
The Tufts 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Christian Jones (Lewisville, NC), sophomore Andrew Berman (Miami, FL), senior Brandon Ching (Honolulu, HI) and Rood took second in the first event of the meet with a time of 1:39.57. Sophomore Kyle Savidge (South Windsor, CT) kept the ball rolling for the Jumbos, finishing second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:09.47). Jones and Olynyk teamed up to go second and third in the 100-yard backstroke respectively, with Jones going 55.90 and Olynyk finishing in 56.84.
The freshman trio of Kevin Kozikowski (Berlin, CT), Mike Napolitano (Fanwood, NJ), and Ian Dinwoodie (East Greenwich, RI) finished third though fifth in the 200-yard butterfly with times of 2:03.72, 2:03.84, and 2:03.99 respectively. Sophomore Eric Douglas (Southbury, CT) finished third in the 50-yard butterfly in 24.16 seconds. Rood added a second in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.81 seconds.
Savidge and Jones also put up strong swims in the 200-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle respectively as each finished second. Savidge recorded a 2:01.74 time, while Jones touched in 4:56.60. Lou Tamposi (Hernando, FL) finished third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:00.55.
In the final event of the meet, the Jumbos finished second and third in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Will Parker (Frederick, MD), freshman John Devine (Oxford, MA), sophomore Austin Wood (Fort Washington, PA) and Rood went 1:28.79, while Olynyk, sophomore Andrew Turk (Westlake Village, CA), senior Alex Strittmatter (Fairfield, CT), and Savidge finished third in 1:31.01.
The Jumbos are next in action on Saturday in a tri-meet at Wheaton College with WPI.
