NORTON - The Jumbo men's swimming & diving team finished off the dual meet season in dominant fashion Saturday, defeating both Wheaton and Worcester Polytechnic Institute 210.5-149.5 and 200-152 respectively. This brings the Jumbos' record to 5-4 on the year.
The men won the meet in convincing fashion from start to finish with many races going 1-2-3 for the Jumbos. They started off the meet finishing first and second in the 200-yard medley relay with sophomore Kyle Savidge (South Windsor, CT), senior Brandon Ching (Honolulu, HI), sophomore Eric Douglas (Southbury, CT) and senior co-captain Owen Rood (Branford, CT) beating sophomore Craig Olynyk (Redmond, WA), freshman Michael Ren (Wayland, MA), sophomore Andrew Berman (Miami, FL) and freshman John Devine (Oxford, MA) 1:38.17 to 1:42.18.
The Jumbos kept it going in the 200-yard freestyle with Savidge, senior Alex Strittmatter (Fairfield, CT) and freshman Mike Napolitano (Fanwood, NJ) sweeping first through third respectively with times of 1:47.95, 1:48.03 and 1:49.38. Freshman John Patterson (Akron, OH) had the best finish for the Jumbos in the 100-yard backstroke finishing second in 57.01 seconds. Strittmatter won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:56.56.
Rood led another sweep in the 100-yard breaststroke finishing just ahead of Ren and freshman Sean Gunn (Thousand Oaks, CA). Rood finished in 1:01.60, Ren in 1:01.87 and Gunn in 1:03.90. Freshman Kevin Kozikowski (Berlin, CT) had the top finish for the team in the 200-yard butterfly finishing second in 2:03.29. Douglas won his second event of the day finishing the 50-yard butterfly in 24.32 seconds.
Sophomore diver Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) dominated both the 1- and 3-meter diving events, scoring 288.22 and 307.88 respectively.
Rood won his third event of the day in the 100-yard freestyle, just beating sophomore Austin Wood (Fort Washington, PA) 48.34 to 50.02. Savidge also won his third event in a Jumbo sweep of the 200-yard backstroke with sophomore teammates Christian Jones (Lewisville, NC) and Olynyk. Savidge won in 1:59.42 ahead of Jones in 2:03.20 and Olynyk in 2:06.69. Savidge would win his fourth event of the night going 56.24 in the 100-yard individual medley.
Senior co-captain Joe McLoughlin (North Eastham, MA) teamed up with fellow senior Peter Debbaut (Hood River, OR) to finish first and second in the 200-yard breaststroke. McLoughlin touched first in 2:18.30 with Debbaut right behind in 2:18.35. Ching led yet another Jumbo sweep by winning the 50-yard breaststroke in 28.31 ahead of Berman in 28.78 and Ren in 28.86.
Napolitano led the final Jumbo sweep of the meet in the 100-yard butterfly just ahead of Berman and Douglas. Napolitano finished in 54.50 with Berman in 54.65 and Douglas in 54.89. Ching and senior Lou Tamposi (Hernando, FL) went 1-2 in the 200-yard IM finishing in 2:03.88 and 2:04.34 respectively.
In the final event of the day, the Jumbos won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:28.96. The team was comprised of freshman Will Parker (Frederick, MD), Olynyk, Strittmatter, and Rood.
The Jumbos will swim their final meet of the regular season before the NESCAC Championships next week at the Wheaton Invitational.
