Women's Swimming & Diving Team Rolls to a Pair of Victories at Wheaton with WPI

First-year Amanda Wachenfeld had the best times in the distance freestyle events

NORTON - Fourteen Jumbos had a hand in producing top times as the women's swimming & diving team won a tri-meet at Wheaton with WPI on Saturday. Tufts scored a 191-158 win over the host Lyons and topped the Engineers 210-149.

Tufts' control of the meet allowed them to discontinue tallying a team score after 13 of the 18 swimming events were competed. However, the Jumbos still had the best times in all of the remaining events.

Head coach Nancy Bigelow's team started off by winning the 200 medley relay in a 1:53.50 time. The foursome was junior KJ Kroetch (Lafayette, CA), sophomore Jenny Hu (Oakland, CA), sophomore Mia Greenwald (Park City, UT) and senior co-captain Courtney Adams (Lake Forest, IL).

Hu had top individual finishes in the 50 breaststroke and the 100 individual medley after Tufts stopped tallying its team score. She swam a 32.12 50 breast and a 1:04.80 100 IM, in which Tufts had the three-best times. Likewise, Greenwald was the fastest in two solo events. She touched first in the 50 butterfly (26.91) and had the best of Tufts' four top times in the 100 fly with her 59.80 finish. First-year Amanda Wachenfeld (Basking Ridge, NJ) rounded off the trio of individuals who had a pair of best times. She won the 1,000 freestyle with a 10:59.73 touch, then swam a 5:22.18 fastest effort in the 500 free.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Adams, junior Lizz Grainger (Nashville, TN), first-year Samantha Sliwinski (Weymouth, MA) and senior Paulina Ziolek (Londonderry, NH) paired their relay win with individual bests. The foursome timed 1:42.74 in the 200 free relay. Grainger led a 1-2-3 Jumbo finish in the 200 freestyle with a 2:00.24 time. Sliwinski was first to the wall in the 50 freestyle (25.77 seconds). Ziolek's 2:37.04 won the 200 breaststroke. Adams took the 100 freestyle in 55.36 seconds.

Six more Jumbos were the leaders in their events. Divers Sami Bloom (Wilton, CT) and Kelly Flanagan (Boxborough, MA) won with scores of 274.13 in one-meter and 238.65 in three-meter, respectively.

Sophomore Jennifer Konick (Salem, OR) swam 1:03.32 to win the 100 backstroke, while senior Katie Russell (Bethesda, MD) butterflied to a 2:16.02 win in the 200. Sophomore Andrea Coniglio (Paramust, NJ) led a 1-2-3 Tufts contingent in the 200 backstroke at 2:17.75. First-yaer Scarlett Hao (Lexington, MA) finished the 200 IM in 2:19.41, the fastest of Tufts' three top times in the event.

The Jumbos, 5-4 overall, head back to Wheaton next weekend for an invitational beginning on Friday.
