WENHAM - Traveling to Gordon College tonight for the first game of the new year, the Tufts Jumbos upended the Fighting Scots, 85-78, to move to 7-3 overall on the season. Senior Alex Orchowski (Cornwall, NY) led the way with 23 points.
With both teams looking to halt a two-game skid, the opening stanza proved hard fought and evenly matched with 13 lead changes overall before the Scots took a slight 35-34 lead heading into the break.
Tufts, however, came out of the gates in the second half firing on offense to quickly mount a nine-point lead in just over four minutes of play. Gordon cut that lead to four behind a jumper by David Dempsey (Wallingford, CT) and a three-pointer from Park Thomas (Scottsdale, AZ).
The Jumbos moved the gap to nine once again following a three-pointer from freshman Ben Ferris (Essex Junction, VT) and two from Alex Goldfarb (New York, NY) off a turnover. The Jumbos maintained the lead and established their largest advantage of the night, going up 12 (70-58) with just under five minutes remaining on the clock.
The Scots would come no closer than seven in the end, falling 85-78 to move to a 3-6 record.
Tufts' Orchowski added 10 rebounds for a double-double, while sophomore Kwame Firempong (Inglewood, CA) posted 14 points and handed out four assists. Ferris finished with 13 points and three steals.
Dempsey finished the evening with 25 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for Gordon, while Luke Hamilton (Mount Airy, NC) netted 16 and dished five assists in the loss.
Tufts begins conference action on Friday, traveling to face Williams for an 8:00 pm tip-off. The Scots return to the court on Saturday as they host conference foe Eastern Nazarene at 3:00 pm.
