Sophomore John Devine won the 50 freestyle in 22.02 seconds

NEW LONDON, CT - Freshman Anthony DeBenedetto (Hopkinton, MA) had a spectacular collegiate debut for the Tufts men's swimming & diving team on Saturday, winning three events as the Jumbos earned victories against host Connecticut College and Middlebury.
Competing in a season-opening tri-meet, Tufts defeated the host Camels 144-135 and topped the Panthers 183-104 to start the season 2-0.
DeBenedetto won the 200 freestyle in a 1:46.21 time, took first in the 200 butterfly (1:55.07), and finished off his trifecta with a 500 freestyle winning time of 4:46.41.
Junior diver Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY), the defending NCAA champion on the one-meter board, opened a new season with two wins on Saturday. He posted a one-meter score of 315.95 points and won three-meter with 327.15 points. Freshman Michael Winget (Shelburne, VT) was also a double-winner. He touched first in both the 200 backstroke (1:56.09) and 200 individual medley (2:01.63), while also adding a second in the 100 backstroke (52.99).
Head coach Adam Hoyt's Jumbos won 10 events overall. They started the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay with a 1:36.81 time. That foursome was Winget, junior Drew Berman (Miami, FL), junior Eric Douglas (Southbury, CT), and sophomore John Devine (Oxford, MA).
Berman and Devine both had individual wins as well. Berman swam best in the 100 breaststroke, timing 1:01.59. Devine was the fastest in the 50 freestyle with a sprint of 22.02 seconds. He also placed second in the 100 freestyle at 48.30 seconds.
Tufts recorded a pair of other runner-up showings. Junior Kyle Savidge (South Windsor, CT) swam 10:20.30 for second in the 1,000 freestyle. Frehsman Cam Simko (Summit, NJ) was second in the 200 freestyle (1:47.88).
The Jumbos are right back at it tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Keene State College for a dual meet starting at 1 pm.
