NEW LONDON, CT - Junior Jenny Hu (Oakland, CA) won the 200 breaststroke and added two runner-up finishes to lead the Tufts women's swimming & diving team in a season-opening tri-meet at Connecticut College with Middlebury College on Saturday.
Facing a pair of strong NESCAC opponents, the Jumbos lost 160.5-118.5 to the Camels and 159-134 against the Panthers.
Hu led a 1-2 Tufts finish in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:30.53 winning time. First-year Laura Cui (Palo Alto, CA) was in second with a 2:32.66 effort. Hu also had second place showings in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.42) and in the 200 individual medley (2:15.39).
Sophomore Samantha Sliwinski (Weymouth, MA), who like Hu was an NCAA qualifier last season, scored second in three events for Tufts on Saturday. She was runner-up in the 100 backstroke with a touch of 1:02.66, in the 50 freestyle sprint at 25.34 seconds, and with a time of 54.78 seconds in the 100 freestyle.
Cui added to a good showing in her collegiate debut with a third in the 100 breaststroke, timing 1:10.87. Other third-place finishes for Tufts came from senior tri-captain Christine Garvey (West Chester, PA) in the 1,000 freestyle (11:06.70) and by sophomore Kathryn Coniglio (Branchburg, NJ) in the 100 freestyle (55.77).
The Jumbos finish a busy weekend on Sunday when they travel to Keene State College in New Hampshire for a 1 pm meet against the Owls.
