CAMBRIDGE - The Tufts men's swimming & diving team placed fourth out of seven teams at the deeply competitive MIT Invitational. The Jumbos scored 409 points at the meet, which was held on Friday and Saturday.
Host MIT, Keene State, Division I Harvard, Wheaton, Bowdoin, and Colby were also at the meet. The Engineers won their own invitational with 1,445 points.
The top performance for Tufts came from freshman Anthony DeBenedetto (Hopkinton, MA). He swam an NCAA "B" qualifying mark of 1:52.09 in the 200 butterfly to place fourth. That also broke the seven-year old team record of 1:54.27 set by Seth Baron at the 2005 New England Championships.
"That was one of our oldest team records and to break it in a mid-season meet is somewhat unheard of in swimming," said head coach Adam Hoyt. "He's an impressive kid and we're very happy to have him."
Junior diver Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) finished second to Harvard's Michael Stanton in both events. Schmidt totaled 340.85 to Stanton's 3:56.60 in the three-meter event. Off the one-meter board, Schmidt earned a 312.85 score while Stanton won at 355.25 points.
The Jumbos had one other top-five performance at the meet. Freshman Michael Winget (Shelburne, VT) posted a fourth-place effort in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.87 seconds.
Head coach Adam's Hoyt's Jumbos finished their first semester of acton with the meet. They will return to MIT on January 19 for a dual meet against the Engineers when competition resumes next semester.
