BELMONT - Playing on Seniors Night, the Tufts women's squash team posted a 7-2 victory over local rival Wellesley College on Friday night at Belmont Hill School. Senior co-captains Mercedes Barba (New York, NY) and Alyse Vinoski (West Hartford, CT) both won their matches to help the Jumbos.
Barba was very decisive in her #1 match victory, defeating Wellesley's Sara Del Balzo 11-8, 11-3, 11-7. At #5, Vinoski would not be denied after falling behind 2-0. She stormed back to win 11-3, 11-3, 11-6 and take the match.
The teams split two other five-game matches. At #2, Wellesley's Emma Haley overcame a 2-0 deficit to Jumbo junior Jessica Rubine (Cranston, RI) with 11-6, 14-12, 11-6 wins. In the seventh match, Tufts junior Hafsa Chaudhry (Westwood, MA) and Wellesley's Emaline Surgenor were tied 2-2 before Surgenor had to retire in the fith game.
At #8, Tufts junior Caitlin Doherty (Topsfield, MA) emerged out of a 1-1 tie to win in four games. First-year Paige Dahlman (Denver, CO) allowed just 13 points in her fourth-match win, including an 11-1 game-three score.
Now 10-12 overall, Tufts has won three straight heading into the Howe Cup Team Championships at Harvard next weekend (Feb. 24-26).
