Junior Lizz Grainger had strong showings in three events for the Jumbos

NORTON - Strong relay performances highlighted the Tufts women's swimming & diving team's final regular-season meet at the Wheaton Invitational on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The non-scoring meet featured teams from host Wheaton, MIT and Clark joining the Jumbos.
Unlike a regular meet, the Wheaton Invite featured several relays and also included time trials for swimmers to record better times in a variety of events. For many Jumbos, it was their last competition of the season. Only 24 will be a part of the team's conference championship roster.
At Wheaton this weekend, the Jumbos placed first and second in the 400 medley relay, first through fifth in the 400 freestyle relay and had the top two spots in the 200 medley relay.
First-year Kathryn Coniglio (Branchburg, NY) swam the lead leg in three first-place relays. She started the 400 medley relay's 4:05.71 time, began a 3:43.35 finish in the 400 freestyle relay and swam the first leg of the 1:52.94 200 medley relay. She was also second in the 200 backstroke individually with a 1:03.69 time.
Sophomores Jenny Hu (Oakland, CA) and Mia Greenwald (Park City, UT) swam the second and third legs, respectively, in both the 400 and 200 medley relays. Senior Saheela Mehrotra (Taipei, Taiwan) was the anchor in the 400, while senior co-captain Courtney Adams (Lake Forest, IL) swam fourth in the 200.
Adams was also right behind Coniglio in the 400 free relay, followed by junior Lizz Grainger (Nashville, TN) and first-year Allyson Fournier (South Windsor, CT). Adams and Grainger also tied for first in the 200 freestyle with identical 2:00.11 times. Grainger added a runner-up effort in the 500 freestyle (5:21.67). Senior Valerie Eacret (Goleta, CA) had the other Tufts individual win, touching first in the 200 butterfly at 2:18.79.
Several Jumbos posted other runner-up efforts, including two by sophomore diver Sami Bloom (Wilton, CT). She scored 434.10 in one-meter and 439.85 in three-meter. Mehrotra raced to a 100 freestyle second in 55.43 seconds. Other seconds came from sophomore Laura Burns (Worcester, MA) with a 2:18.55 in the 200 individual medley, sophomore Alex Dardaris (Newtown Square, PA) in the 100 butterfly (1:01.38), sophomore Ellen Gage (Storrs, CT) at 2:34.66 in the 200 breaststroke and senior Hannah Will (Mount Vernon, NH) in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.47).
Coach Nancy Bigelow's team will now set its sights towards the NESCAC meet at Wesleyan February 17-19.
